What is CrossFit?
It is a workout methodology based on constantly-varied high intensity movements that help everyday life. It works because your body is constantly adapting to new movements/stimulus to get the maximum effect out of each workout (wod). As a bonus, you never get bored!
Originated in 2000 by Greg Glassman and Lauren Jenai, CrossFit is aimed at improving vital areas of the cardiovascular and respiratory system. By partaking in hour-long full body workouts, you’ll feel immediate sensation in your breathing, agility and stamina.
CrossFit is a workout program designed for all body types at different levels. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced CrossFit expert, a comforting place in the program will be found for you. The diverse nature has been welcomed and utilized by expert athletes, military professionals and law enforcement.
There’s a competitive nature that is welcomed in CrossFit, where participants are encouraged to compete against each other, allowing the counteraction to push them further. Competitions paired with the WOD (Workout Of The Day) provide members with the gift of extreme fitness, weight-loss and calorie burning. To incorporate a WOD into your daily routine, visit CrossFit SOAR’s WOD page where you will find sample workouts and news alerts.
Scaling is a term that allows participants to adjust the load (weights), duration (time of repetitions) or intensity to match their level of expertise and exertion. During your dedicated time with CrossFit, you will enjoy seeing improvements in your workout as you scale up.
If you are looking to embark on the CrossFit adventure for the first time, we encourage you to contact our gym where we will partner you with one of our expert coaches. If you’re an avid CrossFit participant in Ho-Ho-Kus, Wyckoff, Ridgewood, Glen Rock, Paramus, Fair Lawn, Midland Park or Hawthorne; CrossFit SOAR would be honored for you to call our gym home.
Can’t I just do these workouts at my other gym?
Yes and no. Do you have a Coach helping you with the movements at your other gym? Do you have a community that will support and push you? The truth is, most regular $19 a month gyms will not allow you to do what we do. Why? Because they don’t want to be involved in your training. They want you to pay each month and come in as little as possible. We want to see you every week because every week we can help you become better.
Do you have to be in shape to start CrossFit?
No way! Our Head Coach, Dave, couldn’t do a pull-up before he started CrossFit. You do CrossFit to get in shape, not just to show that you are in shape.
Is CrossFit only for hardcore people?
Absolutely not. CrossFit can be for everyone. Are some people hardcore? Absolutely. The question is, why are you here? If you are here to get a workout in and stay in shape, you are more than welcome at SOAR.
Will I get injured?
If you treat CrossFit SOAR like a fitness program and listen to the Coaches, the risk of injury is small. There are risks with any fitness program. Injuries happen when you push beyond your limits too often and stop listening to your Coach. If you treat CrossFit like a sport instead of using CrossFit as your training program, you will increase your chance of injury. Sports push you to the limit and beyond and injuries are a natural occurrence due to that. Every person who has ever played a sport has been injured. The question is really whether or not you are willing to listen to the Coaches.
Do you all do the same workout?
Yes and no. We scale or modify each WOD to create a certain stimulus/response. The weights that we post are suggestions. Rx is what is right for you.
Why does it cost so much?
Because we care. We want you to succeed. We have a Coach to help you every step along the way. In each group class we have a Coach that will give you individual attention during our warm-up, skill work, and WOD. At a regular gym, you will not receive nearly the level of help that our Coaches bring to the table. If you were to do a personal training session 3x per week for a month, the average cost is $1000. You can get similar Coaching, a supportive community, and some awesome friends for less than a 1/4 of that group classes. When you break it down, it cost as little as $10 a session.
